Roof repair

Roof Repair in Palmdale, CA

A leak, a broken tile, a few shingles gone after the wind. We find where the water gets in and fix that spot properly.

Most roofs that leak do not need replacing. They need someone to find the actual entry point, which is often a few feet from the stain on your ceiling, and fix it so it stays fixed.

Water travels. It gets in at a cracked tile, a lifted shingle, a rusted pipe flashing or a gap where the roof meets a wall, then runs along the underlayment or a rafter before it shows up inside. We trace it from the stain back to the source, from the attic and from the roof.

On tile roofs, a repair usually means lifting the tile around the problem, fixing the underlayment or flashing beneath, replacing the broken pieces and resetting the rest. On shingle roofs, it means replacing the damaged shingles and sealing them in so the next wind does not take them too.

If what we find is bigger than a repair, we say so, and we show you the photos. You decide what happens next.

Know the signs

Call for a Repair When You See

  1. A ceiling stain

Even a dry one. It shows where water reached, not where it got in.

  2. Tile or shingles in the yard

After an Antelope Valley wind, look around the house. Pieces on the ground mean a gap on the roof.

  3. Cracked tile you can see

Concrete tile cracks from foot traffic, impact and age. Each crack is a path for water.

  4. Rust around vents

Pipe and vent flashing rusts through long before the roof around it fails.

  5. Gaps at a wall or chimney

Where the roof meets stucco or a chimney, the flashing is often the first thing to go.

  6. A musty attic

A damp smell or dark spots on the roof boards from inside mean water is already getting through.

How we do it

How We Do It

  1. Clay tile opened around a chimney to find a leak01

    Trace the leak

From the stain inside back up to where the water actually gets in.

  2. Broken clay tile removed from a roof02

    Open it up

Lift the tile or shingles around the problem so we can see the layer underneath.

  3. S-tile lifted around the base of a chimney03

    Fix the layer that failed

New underlayment, new flashing or new sealant at the actual entry point.

  4. New flashing around a chimney over new underlayment04

    Close it and show you

Tile reset or replaced and shingles sealed down.

Inside a tile roof

Five Layers, and Which One Keeps You Dry

The deck on a Superior Roof Service job

The deck

Plywood or OSB nailed to the rafters. Soft or broken boards are replaced once the old roof is off, before anything else goes down.

The underlayment on a Superior Roof Service job

The underlayment

The waterproof sheet. Tile lets wind-driven rain through; this layer carries it to the eave. On an old tile roof, it is usually what has failed.

The flashing on a Superior Roof Service job

The flashing

Metal at walls, chimneys, pipes and valleys, where the roof stops being one flat plane. Most leaks start at a joint like this.

The battens on a Superior Roof Service job

The battens

Strips across the slope that the tile hangs on, so each course sits straight and water can drain under it.

The tile on a Superior Roof Service job

The tile

Concrete or clay, laid course by course. It takes the sun and most of the rain, and protects the layers under it.

Local rules

Small Repairs and the Permit Rules

Replacing a few tiles or resealing a flashing is a repair. A re-roof is different: in Palmdale it is permitted work with a sheathing inspection after tear-off and a final before the permit closes. If your roof needs more than a repair, we tell you before we start.
