A new roof starts on bare framing or a fresh deck. We install the underlayment, the flashing, the edge metal and the roof covering, tile or shingle, and tie it into the existing roof where an addition meets the house.
The hard part of a new roof on an addition is the joint. Where the new slope meets the old one is where water finds its way in a few winters later, so we spend our time on the flashing there and on matching the courses and the tile profile to the house.
On a new build the roof follows the plans and the materials chosen for the house. Tile roofs get battens and the right fastening; shingle roofs get starter strips, the right nailing and ridge ventilation that matches the attic below.
If you are building, call us before the framing is finished. It is easier to plan a clean roof than to fix an awkward one.

The deck
Plywood or OSB nailed to the rafters. Soft or broken boards are replaced once the old roof is off, before anything else goes down.
The underlayment
The waterproof sheet. Tile lets wind-driven rain through; this layer carries it to the eave. On an old tile roof, it is usually what has failed.
The flashing
Metal at walls, chimneys, pipes and valleys, where the roof stops being one flat plane. Most leaks start at a joint like this.
The battens
Strips across the slope that the tile hangs on, so each course sits straight and water can drain under it.
The tile
Concrete or clay, laid course by course. It takes the sun and most of the rain, and protects the layers under it.

New Roofs and the Building Code
Where a home in unincorporated Los Angeles County sits in a fire hazard severity zone, the county's construction notes call for a Class A roof covering and noncombustible gutters. Palmdale lets you look up your own address on its fire hazard map. We build to whatever the plans and the permit require.

Can you match the tile on my house?
We try to match the profile and colour as closely as the market allows. Older tile colours are not always made any more; when the match will not be exact, we tell you before we order.
Tile or shingle for a new roof?
Both work in the high desert. Tile is heavier and needs framing sized for it; shingle is lighter and faster. Your plans and your budget decide, and we talk you through it.
When should I call about a new roof on an addition?
Before the framing is finished, if you can. It is easier to plan a clean tie-in to the existing roof than to fix an awkward one.
