We clean the gutters and the downspouts, flush them to make sure water actually runs, and look at the roof edge while we are up there. If a hanger is loose or a seam leaks, you hear about it.
Antelope Valley gutters fill differently from gutters in wetter places. Fewer leaves, more blown sand and fine grit from the roof itself, which settles into a heavy sludge at the low end and blocks the downspout. The first big rain then pours over the edge, onto the fascia and down your wall.
We scoop the gutters out by hand, clear each downspout, and run water through to check the flow. Everything we take out goes in a bag, not on your lawn.
Because we are roofers, we look at what gutter crews usually don't: the drip edge, the fascia board behind the gutter and the first rows of tile or shingles. Problems there show up as gutter problems, but they are roof problems.
Know the signs
Your Gutters Need Cleaning When
Water spills over the edge
In the rain, overflow at the front of the gutter means a block somewhere downstream.
Plants growing in the gutter
If seeds are sprouting up there, there is enough dirt to hold water against the metal.
Streaks on the fascia
Dark streaks or peeling paint below the gutter mean water is going behind it.
Sagging runs
A full gutter is heavy. Sagging means the weight is pulling the hangers loose.
Puddles by the foundation
Downspouts that dump next to the house soak the soil where you least want water.
After a windstorm
A big wind fills gutters with sand and debris in a single afternoon.
Questions
Gutter Cleaning Questions
How often should gutters be cleaned in the Antelope Valley?
Most homes need it once a year, before the winter rains. Homes near trees, open desert or a construction site may need it twice.
Do you clean gutters on two-story homes?
Yes. Two-story homes are where people most often should not be on a ladder themselves.
Can you fix a gutter while you clean it?
Small things like a loose hanger, yes. Bigger repairs go on a free written estimate. See gutter repair.
