Littlerock is east of Palmdale along Pearblossom Highway, out where the lots get bigger and the houses sit further apart. It is unincorporated Los Angeles County, so roofing permits here are county permits, handled by Public Works through the Antelope Valley Building and Safety office in Lancaster.

One question we get on bigger properties out this way is whether to switch to a metal roof. In unincorporated LA County that is not only a building decision. The county's reroofing manual says that if a reroof changes the existing material to metal, the Department of Regional Planning approval must be obtained. Allow for that before you order panels.

Gutters are the other thing to get right. Where a county home sits in a fire hazard severity zone, the county's construction notes call for noncombustible gutters and downspouts, and an approved way to keep leaves and debris out of the gutter. A vinyl gutter or an open trough full of tumbleweed scraps is exactly what those rules are written against.

Most roof problems out here are simpler than either: a roof that leaked in the last storm, a gutter that pulled off the fascia in the wind, or shingles that need replacing before a sale. We come out, look at the whole roof and tell you what it needs.

What the Rules Say in Littlerock

  1. 01

    Switching to metal needs Planning

Going from shingle or tile to metal? The county's reroof manual sends that change through the Department of Regional Planning first.

  2. 02

    Gutters in a fire zone

In a fire hazard severity zone, gutters and downspouts must be noncombustible, and gutters need an approved means to stop leaves and debris building up.

  3. 03

    Where the permit comes from

Littlerock has no city hall of its own for permits; county Public Works handles it from the Antelope Valley office.

  4. 04

    Climate zone by ZIP

The Energy Commission files ZIP 93543 under climate zone 14.

Questions

Roofing Questions from Littlerock

Can I switch my Littlerock roof to metal?

Possibly, but in unincorporated LA County a reroof that changes the material to metal needs Department of Regional Planning approval. Ask about it before you buy anything.

What gutters work in a fire hazard zone?

The county's fire zone notes call for noncombustible gutters and downspouts, with an approved way to keep leaves and debris out. Metal gutters with a guard meet the idea; vinyl does not.
