Skylight installation

Skylight Installation in Palmdale, CA

Daylight in a dark hallway or kitchen, without the leak that so many skylights come with.

A skylight is a hole in your roof, so it is only as good as its flashing. We frame the opening, set the skylight on a proper curb, and flash it into the roof layer by layer, the same way we flash a chimney.

Most skylight leaks are installation leaks: flashing lapped the wrong way, sealant doing the job metal should do, or tile set tight against the curb so water dams behind it. Installed properly, a skylight sheds water like the rest of the roof.

We install new skylights and replace old ones. Replacing an aging dome or a fogged unit is a good time to fix the flashing and the curb at the same time.

In the high desert, sun is the other thing to think about. A skylight on a south or west slope brings in a lot of heat; we talk through placement and glazing with you before we cut anything.

Know the signs

When a Skylight Makes Sense

  1. A dark hallway or bathroom

Interior rooms with no window are where a skylight changes the most.

  2. An old dome skylight

Cloudy, cracked or yellowed plastic domes are worth replacing before they leak.

  3. A fogged unit

Moisture between the panes means the seal has failed.

  4. During a reroof

Adding or replacing a skylight is easiest when the roof is open anyway.

  5. A kitchen remodel

Plan the skylight with the remodel, before the ceiling is finished.

  6. Repeated skylight leaks

If it has been patched more than once, replacing the unit and its flashing is the fix.

Questions

Skylight Installation Questions

Can you put a skylight in a tile roof?

Yes. Tile needs more care around the curb than shingle, because tile has to be cut in and the water channel kept open. That is roofing work, and it is what we do.

Do skylights always leak eventually?

No. Skylights leak when their flashing is wrong or worn out. Flashed correctly, they shed water like the rest of the roof.

Should I replace a skylight during a reroof?

If it is old, yes. The roof is already open, so the new unit and its flashing go in with the new underlayment.
